Serving others has been the foundation of Kevin Neal’s life. A Marshall County native who excelled in both basketball and soccer, Kevin was raised knowing the importance of selflessness, teamwork and diligence.
After graduation from Marshall County High School, he started serving others by serving us all in the United States Marine Corps. Achieving eight years of active duty stationed in Camp Lejeune with the 2nd Marine Division, Kevin completed tours in Bosnia and Haiti earning the highly respected distinction of Marine Scout Sniper. In 1999, with a desire to return to his native soil, Kevin pursued a career with the Paducah Police Department working his way to Operations Sergeant.
The tragic events of September 11, 2001 motivated Kevin’s re-enlistment in the Marine Corps. Stationed in St Louis, Kevin served as the Platoon Sergeant of the 3rd Division, 24th Marines Scout Sniper Platoon. He completed three combat tours in Iraq, most recently in 2009.
Captain Carlos Vargas of the Marine Corps and fellow platoon member had this to say about Kevin: “Kevin was consistently evaluated as one of the strongest and best non-commissioned officers in the battalion, and was respected and trusted by peers and senior leaders alike. His reputation was built on integrity, operational experience, discipline and leadership. Kevin never feared or avoided difficult decisions. His decisions were founded on his strong sense of right and wrong, and he acted with the highest degree of moral courage. He held the Marines of the scout sniper platoon to the highest standards of conduct and professionalism and set that standard through his own actions. He has an innate ability to lead and mentor those around him. I count myself lucky for having had the opportunity to work with and learn from a man of his caliber and character.”
The commendations Kevin earned were as numerous as they are remarkable.
As Marine Scout Sniper/Sergeant he was awarded:
USO Hero’s Award for Leadership (Fallujah, Iraq)
Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal
Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three times)
Combat Action Medals (two times)
As Paducah Police Operations Sergeant:
Academy Class Leader
